7 Things You Didn’t Know Can Cause Cancer
Cancer exists in more than 200 known types, and there is a whole host of things that can cause each of these cancers. Most of these are relatively common knowledge today, but here’s a list of some you may not know.
Frequent Flying Can Cause Cancer Risk
A 2015 study found that UV radiation levels are two times higher at 30,000 feet than at ground level. Increased flight times cause increased radiation exposure and therefore your risk of cancer.
Oral Contact
One of the most common types of cancer associated with the human papillomavirus (HPV) is oropharyngeal cancer or throat cancer. The virus can be spread through skin-to-skin and sexual contact and can stay hidden in the body and become active up to 20 years after it first entered the body, which explains why tonsil cancer usually develops much later in life (between the ages 40 and 60).
High-temperature Cooking
Cooking meat at very high temperatures (grilling or frying over an open flame, for instance) creates Heterocyclic Amines (HCA) and Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH). High amounts of these chemicals can cause tumors to form in the breast, skin, liver, colon and prostate.
Leaving Your TV on at Night
The artificial light emanating from every TV set can be linked to cancer, specifically prostate and breast cancer. So your habit of falling asleep with the TV on can have potentially harmful effects on your health.
The Dry Cleaner
The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has found that perchloroethylene or perc chemicals can cause kidney and liver cancer. Many U.S. dry cleaners use these chemicals, but it is possible to find one that doesn’t.
Not Enough Sunlight
We all know that too much sunlight exposure can potentially lead to skin cancer, but we fail to understand that the lack of sunlight is dangerous as well. Exposure to sunlight in moderate doses is by far the best way to obtain Vitamin D, which is rarely found in food, yet is important for our survival. The lack of this vital vitamin can be linked to many problems, including cancer.
Too Many Supplements
Taking supplements has become an essential part of daily life for many. But you may not know that health benefits can only be achieved with the right dose of specific supplements that your body needs. Too many supplements can be even harmful. A 2015 study revealed that consistently taking a high dose of any supplement increases your risk of cancer.
